When it comes to celebrating community, each culture has its own unique traits and traditions; whether it is bringing people together through storytelling, special festivals or even authentically delicious food.
But what happens when it becomes something more significant?
One of the fastest growing cultural communities across the country is the South Asian diaspora, and at the forefront of the groundswell is a quietly growing movement that is gaining momentum.
The South Asian Foundation of Australia (SAFA) is bringing the community together by building a future for the next generation of emerging leaders where fairness, dignity and opportunity is shared by all.
Being intentional about their strategic approach has enabled the foundation to grow deep roots and establish community recognition, especially through their celebration of South Asian voices and changemakers, and being intentional about creating impact collectively.
It all began in 2018 when founder Vithyaa Thavapalan had the vision to launch a third space (BBB) created for South Asians to come together in all their complexity; as founders, professionals, creatives, and as women.
As she reflects in her own words,
“What started as honest conversations and small gatherings has evolved into a powerful network that champions visibility, economic empowerment and leadership, and continues to be the foundation’s heartbest for centering South Asian stories.”
Complementing this is Brown Brotherhood, a growing community for South Asian men to engage in real, reflective dialogue and redefine what support, success and solidarity can look like.
Some of these pioneering initiatives include the Spice Table, where community connections are forged over food and conversation; to the newly launched Talk Taboo To Me, a series of topical dialogues highlighting much-needed reflections and perspectives from the diaspora.
As the foundation’s footprint continues to grow beyond Sydney into other cities around the country, the movement continues to make its mark by sharing the spotlight with other South Asian pioneers who are making a difference in their communities.
